Science proves what we have all suspected for years –  Massage is good for you!

For years us massage therapists, clients and well-being centred folk have been talking about how good a massage is for you. Finally science has proved it.

In a recent study by The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine a group of 53 healthy 18-45 year old volunteers experienced (probably) the most pleasant lab testing ever.

The team, led by Mark Hyman Rapaport, tested 45 minutes of Swedish Massage Therapy versus a light touch massage under controlled, identical conditions. They took samples of each volunteer’s blood and saliva before and after the treatments.

They found that those who received the Swedish Massage Therapy experienced:

  • Large decreases in a hormone linked to aggressive behaviour 1
  • Small decreases in the stress hormone2
  • Boosted the immune system3

Volunteers who had the light touch massage experienced:

  • Large increases in the contentment hormone4
  • Large decreases in stress hormone production5

So if you’d like to swap stressed out and aggressive for content and super healthy you know what to do!

As if you needed another reason to have a massage.
