Ever felt that you were not designed to sit staring at a computer screen for eight hours a day? You were right. The body was made to be in frequent movement so it is important that we look after it if you want to avoid aches and pains. 

Here are five tips to help you help your body at work:

    Sit in your office chair.

    Adjust the chair so that your work surface is at elbow height. Never lean forward to type. Make sure that your chair is close enough to the keyboard. With your arms hanging straight by your sides, bend them at the elbow by 90 degrees. Where your hands rest should be where you place your keyboard.

    Adjust your computer screen to the correct height. Your eyes should be directly in line with the top of the monitor. Sit with your head looking straight ahead. Close your eyes and let them relax. Then open them. Where they naturally focus should be where the centre of your screen should be. If necessary, adjust the height of your screen by using a stand or books. Your monitor should be about an arms length away from your eyes. Try to avoid having bright lights or a window behind it.

    Sit straight so that your back is aligned with the back of the chair. Ensure that your head, neck, back and heels are aligned in a straight line. To find your optimum seat height, raise your chair to it's maximum height whilst you are still able to place both feet flat on the floor. If the desk is too high for this then a footrest can be used.

    Move around. Take a pause every half an hour to rotate shoulders and take a stretch. Gently tilt the head forward, back and from side to side. We are not made to be stationary animals so help your body out a bit.
